Celebrating 25 Years! The first museum solely devoted to the fine arts in Ventura County, the Carnegie Art Museum’s landmark 1907 building originally housed the Oxnard Public Library. Its striking Greco-Roman architecture survived the wrecking ball in the late 1970s. In 1987 the then Carnegie Cultural Arts Center was officially re-named the “Carnegie Art Museum” by the City Council. Thus began a quarter century of service expanding horizons through art.
Today the permanent collection focusing on California art, has grown to nearly 1000 remarkable artworks. Works from the collection have appeared in major traveling exhibits, including ones at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and La Casa Encendida in Madrid. Over the past twenty-five years the Carnegie Art Museum has organized over 210 major art exhibitions, attracted over 255,000 visitors, and brought arts education to 97,000 students of all ages and background from around Ventura County. Sponsorships are needed to keep advancing the Museum’s educational mission and world-class programs that include: exhibits from the Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation, school tours, classroom presentations, Free Family Days, the Arcade Poetry Series, Artist Gallery Talks, and Master Art Workshops. Each year $50,000 to sustain this programming must be raised to augment the Museum’s general operating budget. |
