Guest studio Artist and Oxnard native, Andy Lepe received his Bachelor of Arts at California State University Channel Islands, where he graduated with cum laude and the highest program honors for the Art Department. Andy’s newest series “Color Flow” examines orderly, systematic, and interlacing objects in their relation to color.
At a young age he would lose himself for hours at a time playing a mix of different games. Board games, sports, anything that kept his mind in that childlike mindset of excitement and discovery. He often came up with “on the spot” games. Entertaining himself and others was never ending. By setting guidelines that had undetermined outcomes he would find excitement in seeing the wide range of various outcomes in each experiment.
The state of flow when playing is what he tries to capture through his art. The lines he uses sets calculated boundaries and parameters that often shape his structures into geometric shapes and polygons. Colors on the other hand, he sees as energy. The type of energy he wants to capture goes back to that childlike, boundless freedom of excitement when discovering something new as he creates through the process of making his colors flow.
