Edging Reason- Words an investigation of hand-painted words and phrases by Gary Lang “My painting process is a vehicle for crossing the threshold. Simply put it is a spiritual adventure that employs discipline and savors changeability. The wellspring source of the work is a mutating truth, which is what I nurture and what I am. ---Gary Lang Certainty, (section) acrylic on panel, by Gary Lang, 2011. Over 70 word paintings executed on paper and on panel hang along and down the Museum’s walls interplaying with its Classical architecture. Most importantly, these words are coloristically and poetically crafted by Lang to appear almost like anagrams of his experiences of life’s quirks and phenomena. Words are used like paint to stimulate the formation of mental images. In all, the exhibit will be an enveloping encounter that engages visitors’ vision, hearing and thought. Gary Lang received a B.F.A. from the California Institute of the Arts in 1972 and an M.F.A from Yale University in 1974. He is represented by ACE Gallery Beverly Hills and is currently based in Ojai. He has shown in over two hundred exhibits, including at: the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (La Jolla), The Hague (Netherlands), Tucson Museum of Art, Wadsworth Atheneum (Hartford, Connecticut), Claremont Graduate University, and Albright-Knox Museum (Buffalo, New York). Lang has been a lecturer at Claremont Graduate University, Idyllwild Arts and the University of Pennsylvania among others. his art is in many Public and Corporate Collections such as: the Los Angeles Museum of Art, Museum of Art at University of Michigan (Ann Arbor), Brooklyn Museum, Hewlett Packard, IBM corporation and Paine Webber. |
